Unicode inspection · Artifact cleanup · Optional editorial rewrite

# AI Watermark Remover & Text Cleanup

Find and remove hidden Unicode characters and formatting artifacts that travel with AI-assisted text, then optionally improve the wording. Statistical watermarks are a different thing: this tool does not detect or remove them, and it says so in every result.

What this tool can and cannot do

It finds and removes hidden Unicode characters and formatting artifacts, and can improve wording. It cannot detect or remove statistical AI watermarks: those are patterns in word choice, not characters, and only the AI provider’s own detector can test for them. Results are therefore always marked “Statistical watermark not tested”.

**Where your text goes:** Inspection, hidden-character cleanup, comparison and downloads run in your browser. Standard editing is processed on Cloudflare’s network and is not stored. Pro rewriting sends your text to the AI provider OpenAI to create the rewrite; your text is held encrypted only until the provider call starts, and the encrypted result is deleted when you receive it, or ten minutes after it is ready if you do not. Understanding AI text watermarks

## Hidden characters and statistical watermarks are not the same thing

### Hidden Unicode artifacts

Text copied from chat interfaces, word processors and web pages often carries characters you cannot see: zero-width spaces, byte order marks, soft hyphens, non-breaking or narrow spaces, and direction controls. They are sometimes called watermarks, but most are side effects of formatting. They break search and word counts, cause odd line wrapping and can confuse content management systems.

These characters can be found exactly and removed safely, which is what the free inspection and cleanup step does. Each occurrence is judged from its neighbours, so characters that belong to the language, such as the zero-width non-joiner in Persian words or the joiner inside a family emoji, stay in place.

### Statistical watermarks

Some AI providers watermark text by nudging which words the model picks during generation. The result reads normally and contains no special characters. A detector that knows the provider’s secret key can measure whether the word choices follow the pattern; no one else can see it.

This page does not have access to any provider’s detector, so it does not test for statistical watermarks and does not claim to remove them. Every result carries the label “Statistical watermark not tested”. If you need provenance verification, use the provider’s official tools.

### A practical workflow for AI-assisted drafts

1. Paste the draft and run “Inspect & clean hidden characters”. This is free and happens in your browser.
2. Check anything marked for review. Removing a character that a language needs changes spelling.
3. If the wording needs work, use Standard for mechanical fixes or Pro for an editorial rewrite in your chosen style.
4. Edit the result in your own voice, verify the facts, and follow your organisation’s rules on disclosing AI assistance.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can this tool remove AI watermarks?**

It removes hidden Unicode characters and formatting artifacts, which is what people often mean by a watermark in copied text. It does not detect or remove statistical watermarks such as SynthID-Text, which are patterns in word choice rather than characters, and it never reports them as removed.

**What is a statistical AI watermark?**

Some AI providers slightly bias which words their model chooses so that a matching detector can later recognise the text. Nothing is added that you could see or delete. Only the provider's own detector can test for it, so this page marks every result “Statistical watermark not tested”.

**Does rewriting remove a statistical watermark?**

We make no such claim and do not test it. The optional rewrite is an editorial improvement; it is not a way to hide that a text was written with AI assistance.

**Which hidden characters are removed and which are kept?**

Zero-width spaces, byte order marks, soft hyphens, stray bidirectional overrides, Unicode tag characters and typesetting spaces are removed or replaced. Characters that are part of the language or of emoji are kept, such as the zero-width non-joiner in Persian, the zero-width joiner in emoji sequences and non-breaking spaces in numbers. Anything ambiguous is listed for your review.

**Is the cleanup free?**

Each visitor gets two Standard credits (up to 1,000 words each) and one Pro AI credit (up to 2,000 words) per day. Credits are shared by the AI Content Rewriter and the AI Watermark Remover and reset at 00:00 UTC. Inspecting, cleaning hidden characters, comparing, copying and downloading never use credits.

**Should I disclose AI assistance?**

Follow the rules of your publisher, school or employer. Cleaning formatting artifacts is a normal editing step, but it does not change who or what wrote the text.
