How differences are found

The tool first matches unchanged lines, then looks inside the lines that changed and compares them word by word or character by character. This is the same approach as version control systems use, and it finds the smallest set of insertions and deletions between the two texts.

Added text is underlined in green and removed text is struck through in red. Screen readers announce each change as added or removed in the inline view.

Common uses

  • Checking what an editor, client or AI assistant changed in your article.
  • Reviewing contract, policy or terms revisions clause by clause.
  • Comparing prompt versions or configuration files line by line.
  • Finding a stray character difference between two codes or IDs.

Invisible characters count as differences too. If two texts look identical but the tool reports changes, check both versions for hidden Unicode. The Invisible Character Detector shows exactly where they are.

Want help improving the text itself? Try the AI Content Rewriter, which shows its own changes side by side.

Frequently asked questions

How does the text comparison work?

Lines are compared first, then changed lines are compared word by word or character by character, using the Myers difference algorithm. This finds the smallest set of insertions and deletions that turns the first text into the second.

Should I compare by line, word or character?

Use words for articles and documents, lines for code, lists and data, and characters to find small spelling or punctuation edits.

What does the similarity score mean?

It is the share of characters left unchanged between the two versions. It describes how much was edited, not whether the meaning changed.

Is there a size limit?

Each side can hold up to 60,000 characters. Very different long texts are summarised as replaced blocks so the page stays responsive.

Does my text leave my browser?

No. The comparison runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
