A measurement-first framework for protecting demand and generating enquiries when the answer appears before the click.
Zero-click behaviour is real, but “traffic is dead” is a poor strategy. Some searches have always ended without a site visit: weather, definitions, opening hours and simple calculations are obvious examples. AI Overviews, AI Mode and conversational search expand the number of questions that can be answered inside the interface, yet they can also expose a useful page to people who would never have found it through a single blue-link ranking.
The correct response is to measure the entire journey. A person may see your company in an AI answer, search for the brand later, read a commercial page and submit a form. If analytics records only the final branded visit, the content that created demand gets no credit. This guide explains how to build a practical AI SEO and AEO system around that problem.
How do AI SEO and AEO relate to zero-click search?
AI SEO is the wider operating system. It includes technical crawlability, indexation, content quality, entity clarity, internal linking, digital evidence, AI referral measurement and conversion paths. AEO is one layer inside it. It improves whether an answer engine can retrieve a passage, understand the claim, attribute it correctly and use it to answer a question.
This page owns the problem-aware intent around zero-click search and its measurement. The AEO guide owns the broader methodology, while the SEO and AI search service owns commercial implementation. That boundary keeps the pages useful without making them compete for the same query.
What Google actually says about AI search visibility
Google’s current guidance is less dramatic than most zero-click headlines. Its official generative AI optimisation guide says that established SEO practices remain the foundation because AI features use the core Search index and ranking systems. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google also advises site owners to prioritise useful, original, non-commodity content instead of “AEO/GEO hacks” such as unnecessary AI text files, mechanical content chunking or manufactured mentions.
That changes the planning question. Do not ask, “Which secret markup unlocks AI Overviews?” Ask:
- Can search systems crawl and index the correct canonical page?
- Does the page answer a real question with first-hand or verifiable evidence?
- Can the system identify the business, service, author and location?
- Does the answer lead naturally to a commercial next step?
- Can we measure the page’s impressions, referrals and assisted enquiries?
Measure Google AI visibility before diagnosing a traffic loss
In June 2026, Google announced dedicated Generative AI performance reports in Search Console; Google’s update states that these insights were rolled out worldwide by 31 August 2026. The reports provide impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for generative AI features in Search and Discover.
Use that first-party report before relying on an external “AI rank” score. For a UK-first acquisition programme, segment the United Kingdom separately and compare it with the rest of Europe. A page that earns broad impressions in another market may still be commercially weak if it never assists a suitable UK or European enquiry.
| Signal | What it tells you | Decision it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Generative AI impressions | Which pages appear inside Google’s AI features. | Protect or strengthen pages already earning visibility. |
| Search clicks and CTR | Whether visibility still creates a visit. | Separate a presentation change from a ranking or demand loss. |
| AI referral sessions | Observable visits from ChatGPT and other answer engines. | Identify pages and engines that send engaged users. |
| First landing page | The first page seen before a later form submission. | Credit content that introduces the business. |
| Branded query trend | Whether more people search for the company or product by name. | Detect demand that a direct referral alone cannot explain. |
| Qualified enquiry rate | Whether the resulting contacts match the offer and target market. | Prioritise revenue contribution over raw traffic. |
Search Console and analytics will not produce identical totals. Google explains in its Search Console and Analytics guidance that they measure different parts of the journey: Search Console records Search performance, while analytics records behaviour after arrival. Compare trends and landing-page outcomes instead of forcing the two systems to match row for row.
Measure ChatGPT visibility with referrals and lead context
OpenAI’s publisher guidance says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so content can be discovered, cited and linked. It also says publishers can measure ChatGPT referral traffic in analytics.
A referral alone does not tell you which prompt produced the click or which citation the user saw. Your own forms should therefore preserve as much first-party context as possible:
- first landing URL;
- latest landing URL;
- referrer;
- UTM source, medium and campaign;
- anonymous session path where consent and policy allow it;
- the selected service, problem and budget range;
- the final page that generated the enquiry.
This matters because a person may discover a technical guide through ChatGPT, browse a service page, leave, and return directly. Without first-touch storage, the final form looks like “direct” traffic and the guide appears commercially worthless.
Not every zero-click query deserves the same investment
Zero-click risk depends on what the user needs. A concise factual query is easier to satisfy inside the answer surface than a complex buying decision. Build the content plan around the commercial distance between the answer and the action.
| Intent | Likely behaviour | Best page role |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | The interface may fully answer the question. | Build accurate entity context and route deeper needs to a guide. |
| Diagnostic | The answer can outline causes, but the user still needs help applying them. | Provide a clear method, evidence and a relevant audit or service route. |
| Comparison | The user may evaluate several providers without visiting each one. | Publish transparent criteria, trade-offs and verifiable proof. |
| Transactional | The user still needs pricing, availability, scope or a quote. | Use a focused landing page with qualification and a low-friction CTA. |
| Branded | The user is verifying reputation, capability or contact details. | Keep brand facts consistent and make the next action obvious. |
A practical AI SEO framework for zero-click search
1. Protect the technical search foundation
Check indexability, canonical URLs, rendering, internal links, structured data accuracy, mobile usability and page performance. Google does not require special AI schema. Use structured data when it accurately describes visible content and connects useful entities; do not add types merely to display a longer JSON-LD graph.
2. Give each URL one clear job
A service page should convert commercial intent. A guide should explain a subject. A diagnostic article should help the reader identify a problem. If three pages all target “AI SEO services”, Google and users receive an unclear signal. Merge overlapping pages or rewrite them around distinct questions before producing more content.
3. Publish information an answer cannot commoditise
Generic definitions are easy to summarise and replace. Add material that requires experience: implementation steps, screenshots, limitations, decision criteria, examples, before-and-after evidence, original measurements and clear authorship. This is useful to the reader even if no AI system cites it.
4. Make important answers easy to verify
Lead with a concise answer, then show the reasoning and evidence. Name sources beside the claim. Use descriptive headings, semantic tables and lists when they genuinely improve comparison. The goal is clarity for people and machines, not an arbitrary word count or a rigid “40-word answer” formula.
5. Build evidence beyond your own domain
A company cannot establish every commercial claim by repeating it on its own pages. Relevant case studies, customer reviews, reputable directory profiles, industry references, open-source work and consistent author identities help users verify what the business says. Do not manufacture mentions or seed fake discussions.
6. Design the route from answer to enquiry
A cited page should connect the diagnosed problem to a useful next step. For example, an article about product visibility can route implementation work to the ecommerce AI SEO framework or WooCommerce engineering; a general AI visibility problem can route to an AI search visibility audit. Avoid a generic “contact us” button with no indication of what happens next.
What not to do
- Do not replace SEO with AEO. Google’s AI features still depend on the Search foundation.
- Do not publish unsupported zero-click percentages. Rates vary by platform, market, device and query mix; use your own Search Console data for decisions.
- Do not claim that schema guarantees citation. Accurate markup can clarify entities and eligibility, but it is not a recommendation switch.
- Do not treat
llms.txtas a Google ranking requirement. Google’s current guidance explicitly dismisses unnecessary AI text files as an optimisation shortcut. - Do not block search-oriented crawlers accidentally. Review robots.txt, CDN rules and bot protection; distinguish search discovery from model-training policies.
- Do not optimise for mentions without checking sentiment and accuracy. A wrong recommendation can damage trust.
- Do not report impressions as revenue. Connect visibility to landing pages, qualified actions and customer outcomes.
A 90-day zero-click and AI SEO plan
Days 1–30: establish the baseline
- Export Google Search, generative AI and landing-page data.
- Segment the UK, Europe and other markets.
- Record current AI referrals, branded queries and qualified enquiries.
- Check robots.txt, canonicalisation, indexing and schema errors.
- Assign one primary intent and one commercial next step to priority URLs.
Days 31–60: improve the pages closest to revenue
- Rewrite service pages around buyer problems, scope and proof.
- Refresh articles that already earn impressions but do not create a useful next step.
- Merge pages competing for the same query and redirect only to a close equivalent.
- Add first-hand evidence, source links, useful comparisons and clearer internal routes.
- Store first landing, referral and campaign context with enquiries.
Days 61–90: test commercial contribution
- Compare generative AI impressions with clicks and conversions by landing page.
- Review ChatGPT and other AI referrals for service fit and enquiry quality.
- Repeat a small, stable set of commercially meaningful prompts; record citations and factual errors.
- Strengthen the URLs that show both visibility and business relevance.
- Stop or reframe work that generates broad visibility without a plausible route to revenue.
Decision summary
Zero-click search is a measurement and positioning problem before it is a content-volume problem. Keep the technical SEO foundation healthy. Use AEO to make important answers clear and verifiable. Use AI SEO to connect those answers with brand evidence, commercial pages, attribution and conversion.
The most useful question is not “How do we force every user to click?” It is “Which visibility helps the right customer remember us, visit us and take a qualified next step?”
Frequently asked questions
- What is zero-click search?
Zero-click search occurs when a search result or AI interface satisfies all or part of the user’s need without a visit to a website. It includes classic SERP features as well as AI Overviews, AI Mode and conversational answer engines.
- Is zero-click search bad for SEO?
It can reduce clicks for simple informational queries, but the effect varies by intent. Visibility can still produce citations, branded demand and qualified visits. Evaluate Search Console impressions, clicks, landing-page behaviour and enquiries together.
- Is AEO the same as AI SEO?
AEO is part of AI SEO. AEO focuses on whether an answer system can understand, extract, cite or recommend information. AI SEO includes the wider technical, content, entity, authority, measurement and conversion work across traditional and AI-mediated search.
- Do I need special schema for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there is no special structured-data requirement for its generative AI features. Use valid structured data that matches visible content and continue following normal Search technical requirements and policies.
- How can I measure visibility in Google AI results?
Use the Generative AI performance reports in Google Search Console. They provide impressions and breakdowns by page, country, device and date. Combine this with analytics and conversion data to understand business impact.
- How can I track leads coming from ChatGPT?
Record the referral and UTM parameters, but also preserve the first landing page and anonymous session path where consent allows. ChatGPT cannot normally reveal the user’s original private prompt, so ask the lead how they found you when that context matters.
- Should I optimise every article for an AI citation?
No. Prioritise topics connected to customer problems, comparisons and decisions. A citation for a broad, low-value definition may create less business value than a smaller number of qualified visits to a strong diagnostic or service page.
