Turn real search questions into reviewed WordPress improvements with a repeatable research, editing and measurement workflow.
Choose the job before choosing the prompt
Using AI to assist SEO and optimising a site for AI search are related but different tasks. This guide covers the first: helping a site owner analyse information and improve pages. For eligibility in Google’s generated answers, see the Google AI Overviews guide.
Pick one commercial objective, such as attracting enquiries for a WooCommerce checkout repair service. Define which page should receive those visitors and which supporting articles answer their earlier questions. This prevents a keyword list from turning into several pages competing for the same intent.
1. Assemble a small evidence pack
Export relevant queries and landing pages from Search Console, list your existing URLs and record genuine customer questions. Keep country and language separate. A UK query and a US query may require different examples even when the words are identical.
Share only the data needed for analysis. Aggregated search terms and public page copy are usually enough; customer records and private enquiry messages are unnecessary for a content brief. Save the date and source of each dataset so you can repeat the analysis later.
2. Ask AI to group intent, not invent demand
Here is a reusable prompt for a supplied query export:
Group these queries by the problem the searcher wants to solve. Preserve the supplied metrics without estimating missing values. For each group, identify a matching URL from my inventory, or explain why a new page is needed. Flag ambiguous intent and possible overlap. Return the evidence supporting each recommendation.
Review the group labels yourself. “Payment gateway missing” and “payment declined” can look similar to a model but represent different troubleshooting paths. Check current search results before assigning a page type or assuming a query is commercial.
3. Build a brief from what you can demonstrate
A useful brief states the reader’s problem, the answer, the steps, the evidence and the next action. Include screenshots from an actual test where useful, or a clearly labelled hypothetical example. Ask AI to identify missing evidence instead of filling gaps with invented results.
For example, a checkout article can include the exact symptom, configuration checks, a staging test and a route to professional help. It should not claim that a fix increased revenue unless you have the underlying measurement.
4. Edit and implement on WordPress
- Check every factual claim and external source.
- Keep one clear page title and descriptive section headings.
- Set a relevant SEO title and description without promising a ranking outcome.
- Link only to useful existing pages and verify their destinations.
- Review mobile layout, tables and any code examples.
- Use descriptive alt text for informative images; decorative images can have empty alt text.
Google’s guidance on generative AI content warns against producing many pages without adding user value. A human review should examine originality and usefulness as well as grammar.
5. Measure the change you actually made
Record the URL, edit date, target query group and expected outcome. Compare relevant impressions, clicks and enquiries over comparable periods. Annotate promotions and other site changes. A rise after an edit is an observation; it is not proof that AI assistance caused it.
If the page attracts irrelevant queries, refine its scope. If visitors arrive but do not understand the service, improve the offer and next step. Rewriting more paragraphs will not solve every conversion problem.
Common questions
- Can AI do keyword research without a paid tool?
- It can help organise supplied queries and suggest questions to investigate. It cannot turn an unsupported estimate into verified search demand.
- Should I automate publishing?
- Keep editorial and technical review in the workflow, particularly for claims, links, code and business offers.
